The problem

The UK throws away roughly 9.5 million tonnes of food every year. About a third of that comes from the supply chain — bakeries with end-of-day loaves, supermarkets with short-dated stock, restaurants with prep over-ordered for the lunch rush. The food is safe, sellable, and still hours away from being skipped.

At the same time, more than 9 million people in the UK face food insecurity. Local charities have the demand and the infrastructure to distribute, but lack a way to find the donations near them in time.

What Sustaplates does

• Sellers list surplus food with photos, pickup windows, and a discount price. The platform handles payments (Stripe Checkout — we never see card data), pickup coordination, and the option to flag the listing as a donation instead.
• Buyers discover deals near them by postcode, distance, category, and dietary needs. Checkout is single-click from the listing detail page.
• Charities claim donation listings — manually or via auto-accept rules — and receive an HMRC acceptance certificate PDF the seller can file with their tax return.
• Buyers can also donate.At checkout the buyer can choose "Buy & donate" — the seller is paid, the item is handed to a charity the buyer picks, and an HMRC certificate is generated automatically.
